A Safe Place to Grow
Amidst the difficult social and economic situation in Lebanon, Swiss Barakah Charity has launched a project that brings hope, support, and perspective to children with intellectual disabilities. Our Psychosocial Support Center is a safe space where children are not only guided and encouraged but also strengthened in their dignity and individuality.
Children with intellectual disabilities are among the most vulnerable groups in crisis regions. They often face exclusion, a lack of support, and overwhelming challenges within their families. This is precisely where our Psychosocial Support Center comes in: we provide individual care, therapeutic assistance, and opportunities for social participation.
Our team of experienced psychotherapists, psychologists, educators, and trained volunteers creates an environment where children can gradually develop their abilities. Through creative methods, learning games, and daily life training, they actively advance their development. At the same time, they receive psychological support to reduce anxiety, build self-confidence, and gain emotional stability. This is complemented by therapeutic activities such as music, movement, and art therapy, which foster growth in a playful way and bring joy.
An essential part of our work is also the involvement of families. Parents and relatives participate in information sessions, counseling, and practical workshops. They learn how to best support their children in everyday life and realize that they are not alone with their challenges. Shared celebrations, group activities, and family workshops strengthen bonds and create a sense of community. In this way, children not only receive individual support but also experience social integration – learning to communicate, build friendships, and participate actively.
The progress we witness in our center is remarkable. Children who hardly spoke before are now beginning to use words and express their feelings. Families report a sense of relief and new hope in their daily lives. Parents feel strengthened by our support and develop closer bonds with their children. Meanwhile, the children gain confidence, independence, and joy in shared activities. At the same time, the project helps reduce stigma and raises awareness for inclusion within society.
Our vision is clear: every child – regardless of their abilities – has the right to live with dignity, safety, and security. With the Psychosocial Support Center, we contribute to ensuring that children with intellectual disabilities in Lebanon can develop their potential and no longer stand on the margins of society. Equally important is strengthening their families so that hope and confidence can once again become part of their everyday lives.
