Blatten in the Lötschental: For the first time, we provide disaster relief in Switzerland
Blatten in the Lötschental
On Friday, May 30, 2025, huge masses of rock and ice thundered into the valley. A rockfall above Blatten (VS) triggered a massive debris avalanche that hit the village hard. People had to be brought to safety, houses were damaged, the entire Lötschental was in shock.
In this exceptional situation, we quickly decided to act. For the first time, we are providing direct disaster relief in Switzerland: CHF 35,000 in emergency aid is available for affected families and the municipality of Blatten. The funds, coordinated with local partners, go into emergency shelters, material support, and initial reconstruction measures.
Within just a few days, more than 900 individual donations have been received. This overwhelming solidarity shows: Even in Switzerland, our community can respond quickly and effectively when people are in need. Particularly encouraging is that the campaign has been widely recognized – also across denominational boundaries.
Until now, our aid in Switzerland has focused on long-term social projects – food distributions, support for those in need. The step toward Blatten marks an important moment: When people in our country suddenly lose everything, we stand by their side.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this natural disaster. May our support be a small ray of hope – in a time when so much is slipping away.
